Remi Gone, Wimer Back?
In some of the weirdest breaking news I think we might see all season in MLS, the Montreal Impact have announced that they have fired head coach Remi Garde and hired former Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera. Now… I need to break things down here one piece at a time because my head hurts already.
Remi Garde was with the Impact since 2017 and during his time in charge of the club had; 28 wins, 9 draws, and 30 losses. Garde never truly impressed me as a manager with his tactics but I do have to say he always had his squad fighting for a playoff spot. His roster decisions confused me to an extent but I do have to say I think the connection to Canadian internationals that he had with Zachary Brault-Guillard, Mathieu Choiniere, Samuel Piette, Shamit Shome, and others. And Garde used his club’s connection to Serie A side Bologna pretty well, grabbing players on loan like Orji Okwonkwo and Lassi Lappalainen. But at the end of the day the talent, tactics and results weren’t there. So FINE I am okay with the Impact not wanting to continue with Garde and move on but… WILMER CABRERA?!
Wilmer Cabrera? The guy who was just fired last week because he (very similar to Garde) was struggling to make a playoff push with a team that talent wise should probably be there? Wilmer Cabrera… who has had a losing record at every MLS team he has gone to? Wilmer Cabrera… I think you get the point. But bringing in Cabrera has to be one of the strangest head coaching moves I’ve ever seen. Why try to say to the league that they are going to move on from Garde and be better, trying to make a playoff push, then turn around and sign a head coach who was in the same. exact. position.
Oh MLS… you never fail to amaze me.
