The 2019 MLS Expansion Draft Breakdown
On Tuesday, November 19th another fun rendition of the MLS Expansion Draft will occur. It is always a fun time! Who will your team protect? Will the new teams be looking for future pieces? Starting caliber talent? Depth pieces? What are the intentions of the newest MLS side?
This year’s expansion draft will be for Nashville SC and Inter Miami who are joining MLS in 2020. If you are not familiar with how the Expansion Draft works I’ll break this down for you. Each new franchise can select up to 5 current MLS players from other teams to add to their roster. However, each current MLS franchise can protect 12 players on their current roster that can NOT be taken (In previous years it was 11 but this draft it was upped to 12). There are 5 current MLS teams that can’t have a player taken from them; D.C. United, Vancouver Whitecaps, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, and the New York Red Bulls because they had players selected in the last expansion draft. Finally, Generation Adidas and HomeGrown players are automatically protected from this draft as well.
If you are a fan of Inter Miami or Nashville SC this is an exciting time for your team. Up to 5 new MLS caliber players will be on your squad, the MLS SuperDraft is next, the MLS Re-entry draft too! Some notable MLS Expansion Draft picks have been; Kei Kamara, Tyler Miller, Latif Blessing, Heath Pearce, Daniel Lovitz, Tommy McNamara, and more!
