Just What The Doctor Ordered: RBNY Blank Inter Miami, 4-0
Where do I even begin – Friday Night this was a perfect result at the right time for the red side of New York, as the Red Bulls defeated Inter Miami on the road, 4-0. With a brace from Fabio Gomes Netto and stellar performances form a handful of others, this convincing win should give RBNY a massive boost after several painful, disappointing results in recent weeks. RBNY got almost everything correct on the day, from game plan, to game day execution and overall team chemistry. A result like this makes you wonder where in the hell this team has been for the past couple months.
There are several takeaways from this contest, but among the most important is Fabio and Patryk Klimala finally starting to build a partnership. There combination play was immaculate on Friday, as both would get on the score sheet. Not many teams in the world football play with a two-striker formation, but if Fabio and Klimala continue to grow together, RBNY could be an absolute nightmare for opposing sides. However, to do so, they will need a consistent, play-making number 10 behind them, giving them the service they need. That is where Omir Fernandez comes in – in my opinion, he was the best player on the field on Friday. Fernandez’s ability create space, not only himself but for others, is exactly what RBNY needs. Fernandez was a part of almost every build-up on Friday: this indicates that, if Head Coach Gerhard Struber continues to give him playing time, Fernandez may be able to help this team make a final push for a playoff spot.
Other standouts from the game were New York’s wing backs: John Tolkin and Tom Edwards. Not only did Tolkin and Edwards contain the wings and help prevent Inter-Miami from buildup play, but their distribution was also a massive part of our teams offense. If these two defenders can continue to contribute offensively, they will give RBNY a massive boost going forward. Although the Red Bull defense didn’t have much to do on the day, they still did an excellent job of keeping Gonzalo Higuain at bay, preventing him from having a significant effect the game.
Carlos Coronel secured another clean sheet in his first season in the MLS. Though Nico Figal’s red card allowed RBNY to dictate all of the game, I am proud of the fact that Struber allowed the team to keep pushing for more. Red Bull have been a man up in previous games this year, but the coaching staff had asked the team to sit back, giving up what should have been easy wins. On Friday, RBNY kept the pressure on, which led to a big win for the boys in red, on the road no less.
Friday’s win is exactly what RBNY needed, especially with massive midweek game against New York City FC approaching. I hope that this result will not only motivate the players, but also Red Bull fans, as Wednesday’s home match again NYCFC can only be described as a must win game. If the Red Bulls bring this energy to the first edition of the Hudson River Derby this week and secure a result, it would be hard for any team in the MLS to stop them.
