The New England Revolution Hire Caleb Porter As Next Manager
The New England Revolution have added their next manager in club history! After the departure of Bruce Arena during their 2023 campaign, the Revs have found his replacement in another MLS veteran, Caleb Porter. You read that correctly, Caleb Porter is back on an MLS sideline! The 48 year old Porter took a year off of MLS coaching after departing the Columbus Crew at the end of the 2022 season.
Caleb Porter, especially for his age, has been one of the most successful MLS managers we’ve seen in the modern era of the league. Porter has won at every club he has managed at. During his 5 seasons managing the Portland Timbers, Porter would win the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, finish atop the Western Conference regular season standings twice, and win MLS Cup in 2015. With the Timbers, Porter would manage 200 games with a record of; 84 wins, 56 draws, and 60 losses. After leaving Portland in 2017, he would be the Gregg Berhalter replacement in Columbus to begin their 2019 campaign. Porter would go on and manage Columbus for 4 seasons. He would help the Crew win the 2020 MLS Cup as well as the 2021 Campeones Cup. In his 138 games managed for Columbus, Porter would finish with a record of 53 wins, 38 draws, and 47 losses.
Caleb Porter knows how to win within Major League Soccer. You can see it from his coaching record, his accolades, and his trophies. The one “flaw” around Caleb Porter I would argue his off the field relationships. In the past we’ve seen poor relationships with front office members and even players get in the way of what Caleb Porter brings you on the field. So this move for New England is risky in that sense. But… who's to say that Porter hasn’t grown a bit in his year off from coaching? Even if he hasn’t, Porter will bring you success and this Revs roster is primed for success within MLS. I feel we could see the Revolution be one of the tougher teams within this league for the next few seasons… it’s just a clock to see when/if Porter is removed from his position with the club for something off the field.
