From a NYCFC Fan, Keep Your Head Held High Ronald
Ronald Matarrita made a costly mistake in NYCFC’s playoff game versus Toronto FC. As a NYCFC fan I immediately jumped up, screamed, and was distraught. I did what any fan of a team would do (and maybe with a few drinks down), trash Mataritta’s decision with some choice words. Then seeing the Pozuelo PK goal, I was done. But after the pain of NYCFC’s season being done, after the pain of another elimination to Toronto FC, and after the pain of a hangover went away… I thought about Ronald Matarrita. I didn’t think about the play, I didn’t think about the game, I thought about him as a human. I was FARRRR from ever playing a professional sport in my life. I played high school football and that was it, and play is even a stretch. But I tried to put myself in the place of Matarrita and I couldn’t imagine how I would feel. After reading reports about Matarrita in the locker room crushed, apologizing to fans after the game, and for what he has done for us all season long, I am support my left-back.
I think that we forget sometimes that these players are people too. Treat them kind and they will treat you kind back. And look I’m not saying to not get on a players back or voice opinions, but as with everything, there is always a line. I also think that in 2019 this viewpoint that I have is more and more common.
When you look at 2019 as a whole for NYCFC and Matarrita, is was a good one. NYCFC had its best season ever. With injuries and some rotation, Matarrita had to play huge roles in various positions. He played in 26 total games, scored a goal, and recorded an assist as well. I would also argue that leading into the playoffs, he was one of our top players. I think all NYCFC fans should be supporting a guy who has given his all to us this season.
No, I am not justifying his mistake. It was a huge mistake, it ended our season, but not all the blame should be placed on the shoulders of Ronald. Keep your head held high brotha!
