LAFC, Your 2019 Supporter's Shield Winners
Congratulations LAFC? It’s not like we haven’t known that they were going to win the Support Shield for months now right? LAFC secured their club’s first trophy after their 3-1 win over the Houston Dynamo on 9/25. LAFC have had one of the most dominant regular seasons in MLS history and now have secured a trophy as well. Currently LAFC have the front runner for MVP in Carlos Vela, one of the league best all around midfielders in Mark-Anthony Kaye, a fantastic center-back partnership in Walker Zimmerman and Eddie Segura, plus much more.
LAFC winning the 2019 Supporter’s Shield locks them in for a 2020 CONCACAF Champions League spot which will be the first time we see them in that competition as well. If LAFC can hang on to a lot of their key pieces it could be interesting to see how they perform in that competition. I am expecting them to lose Diego Rossi, but if they can sign another forward and maintain their key squad you have to think LAFC can do well in CCL action.
LAFC are now in the middle of two more potential record breaking storylines as well. First, LAFC are just three points shy of tying the 2018 Red Bulls with the most points in a MLS regular season with 71 points. Only four points will break that record; facing Minnesota on the road and Colorado at home looks like a decent recipe for those four points. LAFC’s forward Carlos Vela is also looking to break a record that was set last season, most goals in a single season. Carlitos currently sits at 30 goals, just one behind Josef Martinez’s 31 goals he scored in 2018.
It should be an interesting final two weeks for the MLS regular season for LAFC. Are they focused on these records? Or are sights set on the playoffs?
