The Impact, Champs of Canada
Congratulations to the Montreal Impact on winning the 2019 Canadian Championship. The Impact have now won their 4th Canadian Championship in club history. With their 3-1 PK win over Toronto FC, the Impact have sealed their place in the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League as well.
After a big first leg of the Canadian Championship final which saw the Impact win at home 1-0, the Impact had to go to BMO Field to seal the Cup over Toronto FC. A TFC favorite Tsubasa Endoh came up clutch in the 70th minute to score for TFC and force this final to head to extra time. After a scoreless extra time, it came down to PKs, everyone’s favorite. The big boys (Pozuelo and Bojan) put away their PKs and things were even after one round. In the next round, Jozy’s shot hit the cross bar while Daniel Lovitz slotted his shot home. A similar scene in the next round, Patrick Mullins PK was saved while Rudy Camacho finished his for the Impact. Jonathan Osorio stepped up to the spot for TFC, with a correct sided dive Clement Diop watched Osorio’s shot go wide and hit the post. Diop was raised up on the shoulders of Impact players and so was the Voyageurs Cup.
Montreal’s leader and captain Ignacio Piatti won the 2019 Canadian Championship’s best player as well as the tournament’s Golden Boot (with 4 goals). Piatti also went on to tie Sebastian Giovinco as the competition’s all time goal scorer (with 6 goals).
Another fun note after this game, Impact manager Wilmer Cabrera becomes the first ever manager to win both the U.S. Open Cup and the Canadian Championship. You know what they say about Cabrera, the dude knows how to win knockout tournaments.
But looking forward, the Impact will now have a shortened off-season and extended 2020 season. With CONCACAF Champions League play to start next season, the Impact are going to need to make some major changes quickly in the off-season. What do they do about Piatti? Will Wilmer remain as manager in 2020? Can they have some depth? What about that backline…
But oh yeah… congrats guys!
