Portland Timbers Acquire Goalkeepers James Pantemis And Trey Muse
The Portland Timbers have acquired two goalkeepers ahead of the 2024 MLS season. First, the Timbers have signed free agent goalkeeper James Pantemis who last played for CF Montreal. The 26 year old won two Canadian Championships with CF Montreal during the 2019 and 2021 seasons. Pantemis has not yet featured for the Canada National Team but has been called into camps prior. Pantemis has 49 career games split between CF Montreal, Valour FC, and FC Montreal. During these games he has recorded 12 career shutouts.
Portland has also acquired goalkeeper Trey Muse from the Charleston Battery for an undisclosed transfer fee. The 24 year old Muse has bounced around the USL Championship over the last few years after leaving the Seattle Sounders system at the end of the 2021 MLS season. During his time within the Sounders systems he only featured on loan within the USL Championship on their 2nd team of the Tacoma Defiance. He also spent one season on loan with the San Diego Loyal while with the Sounders. After 2021 he has made USL Championship appearances for the likes of Memphis 901 FC and the Charleston Battery. In 109 career games in the lower divisions he has recorded 24 clean sheets and last season helped lead the Battery to a USL Cup final.
Pantemis and Muse now join the likes of Aljaz Ivacic and Hunter Slute in the Timber’s goalkeepers room. There are rumors that Ivacic could be on the outs with the Timbers, leaving Pantemis, Muse, and Slute as starting options for the club. With his age and MLS experience, I’d think Pantemis is the best starting option at this point. But we will see what Phil Neville decides to go with in the pacific northwest.
