Austin FC Claim Winger Jader Obrian From MLS Re-Entry Draft
After Stage 1 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft, Austin FC have selected winger Jader Obrian. Obrian remains within the state of Texas after this stage as he moves from FC Dallas to Austin FC. The 28 year old had 7 goals and 4 assists across all competitions for Dallas last year. When I look at the current group of Austin FC winger’s (Ethan Finlay, Emiliano Rigoni, and CJ Fodry), Obrian looks to almost be a starter among this core. Obrian’s offensive output in 2023 was better than Rigoni and I’d slot him in just under the production of an Ethan Finlay at this point.
To me this is not “THE” move to help Austin turnaround an abysmal 2023 season. But, if you are trying to build a trophy winning roster within MLS, I’d argue that having someone with the ability and production of Jader Obrian as your third or fourth winger isn’t a bad option. Austin FC needs to make a ton more signings if they want to find success in their 4th season. But, finding a solid depth piece within MLS is a smart move to begin under the management of new Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell.
